Start a side hustle to supplement your income

Difficult economic times and tight household budgets call for creative thinking. Why not turn your hobby into a business and supplement your income with these side hustle ideas?

Could you do with a little extra money to get by each month? One of the ways to pad your income is to start a side hustle – an activity or business you do to earn extra money on the side while working a full-time job. Your extra ‘gig’ could be anything from offering a garden refuse removal service to managing social media for a small business. It’s time to start a side hustle to supplement your income.

Before you start your side hustle and rake in the extra cash, consider your capacity – and whether you will have time for extra work. The trick is to do something lucrative on the side without negatively affecting your full-time commitments.

Consider also what you will do with the extra income. You could use it to pay off your debt (we’ll always strongly suggest this option!), build an emergency fund (another responsible option we highly suggest!), save for a special occasion, or put it towards projects at home, such as investing in water tanks or replacing gutters.

Take a look at some of our ideas for a side hustle below:

1. Buy and sell vintage or second-hand items

If you have the skills to take an old piece of furniture and turn it into a must-have item, you could make some extra cash buying and selling old goods online. Whether you use a platform such as Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or BidorBuy, always do your research first.

2. Sell items you no longer want

There is a lot of truth in the old saying that “one person’s trash is another’s treasure.” If you have items that are taking up space at home – or, worse, if you’re spending good money storing them at a storage facility – consider selling them on an online marketplace. There will always be someone looking for that old set of side tables or standing mirror.

3. Become a housesitter

Nobody likes leaving their home unattended when they go away. You can advertise your services as a housesitter – or a petsitter too, if you like animals – and make a little extra income on the side by looking after other people’s homes while they are out of town.

4. Start a blog

Do you have something you want to write about? Start a blog! There are several ways to make money by blogging, such as through advertising, sponsored posts, brand collaborations, affiliate links, product and service reviews, giveaways and sponsored social media posts. Before setting up your blog, do your research so that you have the best chance for success. Best practices include posting excellent quality content regularly and actively engaging with your audience through social media.

5. Turn your hobby into a side hustle

If you have a talent for making crafts, you could sell your items online. There will always be a market for homemade knits and crocheted pieces. Think, baby blankets and scarves. Are you great at baking? Everybody needs a cake now and then! You can join a “mompreneur” group on Facebook to sell your homemade items or consider international marketplaces like Etsy.

In the current economic climate, every cent counts. The money you make from a successful side hustle can help you free up cash flow and give you a headstart towards paying off your debt. If your debt is weighing you down, send us your details and we’ll get you on the path to financial freedom.
